In terms of security, so far the new Bitdefender is the newest suite that will keep you safest. It outperformed last year's leader, Norton Internet Security, blocking more malware and viruses, and detecting fewer false positives, than any suite this year. Determining which suite will keep you safest is an imperfect science, especially because CNET uses multiple third-party sources to ensure that our results aren't skewed by a single test. However, Bitdefender consistently scored at the top or among the top four suites tested, and so we're confident in recommending it above all others if security is your only determination.
In terms of system performance, as you can see on the chart below, Norton Internet Security remains the suite with the lightest impact on your performance. (Read more on how CNET Labs tests security programs.) However, this year it under-performed on two key metrics: boot time impact, which is the time you have to wait to use your computer after turning it on; and scan time, the amount of time it takes to run a scan. Bitdefender's impact on start up and shut down times leaves much to be desired, but its effect on your computer as you use it turned out to be minimal.
It's also $10 more than Norton Internet Security, so we strongly advise you check out the free 30-day trial and be sure you're comfortable with the price you'd be paying for the protection and ancillary features you'd be getting.
Overall, we're comfortable at this point with recommending Bitdefender as the best high-end security suite so far this year. That may change as the last few suites get released.

The handheld device uses a laser instead of lenses to identify errors in the water, food or blood, and costs less than $ 100 (£ 60) to build.

Scientists hope the technology will improve healthcare in areas lacking sophisticated diagnostic equipment.
Details of the microscope - created at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) - were published in the journal Biomedical Optics Express.

The network will support 5 – 12 Mbps download speeds and uploads of 2 – 5 Mbps. These speeds are about the same as many home broadband connections in the U.S., which makes it extremely fast by mobile standards. It’s not quite the speed of lighting from the commercial, but it is about 10 times faster than Verizon’s existing 3G network.
Interestingly, Verizon isn’t launching its 4G service with any mobile handsets. The first device to support Verizon’s LTE network will be the LG VL600 USB modem, with the Pantech UML290 following soon. Both devices will sell for $100 after a $50 rebate and a two-year contract.
Verizon subscribers will be able to select from two 4G LTE mobile broadband plans: $50 per month for 5 GB of data or $80 for 10 GB.
While there is no cap on how much bandwidth one can consume, we are concerned that there is no unlimited plan available. Overages will cost $10 per GB in both of Verizon’s LTE plans. Despite its impressive speeds, the cost of these packages means that an avid Internet user would be unable to switch to LTE as a primary source of broadband. This also means that we’re not yet likely to see a cord-cutting revolution like the one that occurred when people switched from landlines to cellphones.

is testing a new cellular plan that offers unlimited text and data to a limited group of customers for $70. Is it just a one-time promotion by the nation’s largest wireless carrier, or is it the beginning of a new pricing plan that undercuts its main competition?
The new plan offers 450 monthly minutes and unlimited Verizon mobile-to-mobile, texting and data. It’s not available on Verizon’s website, though; you have to call the number specified in the promotional e-mail to get the plan.
The deal only applies to those who received the e-mail; if you call the number and didn’t get the promotion, Verizon’s computers will know. Buying the same plan on Verizon’s website will cost you $90 ($40 for the minutes + $20 for text + $30 for data).
The carrier is also offering a discounted Family SharePlan for $140, which includes 1,400 minutes and unlimited data, text and Verizon mobile-to-mobile; it costs $20 per month to add an additional line.
As Boy Genius Report points out, the plan looks very similar to Sprint’s “Everything Data” plan, which also offers 450 minutes and unlimited messaging, data and mobile-to-mobile minutes. You can get only get the same price on AT&T if you’re using a “basic” phone; you can’t get the same deal with a feature phone or a smartphone.
Could this be the precursor to a new price war? AT&T and Verizon engaged in a price war earlier this year, but the stakes are about to skyrocket with the impending release of the Verizon iPhone. Having a cheaper plan could be the catalyst Verizon needs to get thousands of AT&T iPhone customers to switch. Don’t think for a second that AT&T wouldn’t fire back, though.

Jeopardy The merger of AT& T and T -Mobile ran into a
snag today when the U .S . Department of
Justice ( DOJ) claimed it would violate U . S.
antitrust laws . The DOJ believes it will harm
the competitiveness of the wireless industry.
The $ 39 billion acquisition was on track to be
finalized in early 2012 so this decision came
as a shock to AT& T . They said they were
“surprised and disappointed” by the filing.
Sprint Nextel Corp . has lobbied against this
merger for months, stating it will harm
consumers through higher prices and lower
device options. Sprint asked the government
to block the deal back in March, and filed a
formal petition with the FCC in May.
Some analysts believed the merger was
doomed from the start. To try and minimize
the risk of the deal falling apart, AT& T
promoted the merger as one that would
benefit consumers by spreading 4 G ( LTE )
across the country faster than if the two
companies remained separate .
This ruling is not permanent , as it can be
renegotiated and resubmitted for approval .
Jeff Kagan, an independent telecom analyst
believes the government is saying the deal will
not be approved the way it is currently
structured.
So this means AT& T will need to make some
concessions, and they have indicated in the
past that they would be willing to do so to
make this merger happen .
The Communications Workers of America
(CWA ) is speaking out against the decision of
the DOJ, stating this deal was going to create
good jobs and bring better Internet
technology to rural areas . The CWA cited the
AT& T announcement which claims they will
bring 5 ,000 jobs, which were once
outsourced, back into the U .S .
If the deal does fall apart , AT& T may have to
pay $ 3 billion in breakup fees to T -Mobile .
